Children Playing Cricket: Everyday Life and Memory in the Caribbean. A reflection on my childhood playing cricket in Caribbean streets, revealing how colonial history lingers in ordinary moments of joy.
What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Cricket in the Road!
As a child growing up in the Caribbean, I really enjoyed playing cricket in the road. The rules were basic, you knock the ball you get one run and if you caught the ball you got to bowl.

The bats were never official sports equipment. It was a piece of board hewn down into the desired shape. Some days you gripped the handle of the bat and felt splinters. That never stopped us!

The ball was always a tennis ball. The wickets varied widely from a piece of board propped against a bucket or some other random, found object.
We played for hours, blocking the way of traffic. Thankfully, our street was narrow and not very busy. The only drawback is that when some folks started losing; they would catch their ball midair and run all the way home with it. Game Over!
