Where history gets messy, my stories get real.

Where I’m From

St.Kitts is where I’m from.

Every year, without fail, I assign the exact same poem to my 8th-grade English class. It’s called “Where I’m From,” written by George Ella Lyon. We begin by reading the original poem together and discussing it—its imagery, its honesty, and the way it quietly conveys a whole life within a few lines. After that, my students write a short reaction. Then comes the real work: I give them a template outline of the poem, and they use it to write their own original “Where I’m From” poem.

Inspiration Poem:

Where I’m From by George Ella Lyons

I do this for one simple reason—I want to know them. Early in the school year, before grades, expectations, and routines fully take hold, I want a glimpse into their worlds. Some students write light, almost playful poems. Others dig DEEP. And every single year, without exception, I walk away from that stack of poems with wet eyes. Always.

I often think back to my student teaching mentor. Her name was Kelly Quinn. She once told me, “Miss Clarke, you cannot TEACH your kids unless you KNOW your kids.” That advice became more than just good guidance—it became the primary, guiding principle of my entire 20+ year career. I assign this poem in the spirit of her mentorship and her wisdom.

Each year, I write a new “Where I’m From” poem right alongside my students. What continues to amaze me is how many memories I unearth in the process. Stories I hadn’t thought about in years resurface. Ordinary moments suddenly feel meaningful again. It’s a reminder that knowing where we’re from is never a finished story.

Today, I’m sharing one of my original “Where I’m From” poems.

I’m challenging you to read the original poem, then mine—and guess what? I’ve included the template, too. Because this invitation isn’t just for my students anymore.

You can write your very own “Where I’m From” poem.
